Llandeilo leave with 100% record intact – and WRU Clubs U18 Cup

LLandeilo celebrate win No 18 in their unbeaten season as they lift the WRU Clubs U18 Cup

The latest, and biggest, win of their incredible season to date allowed Llandeilo to add the Cup to their Carmarthenshire League title. They still have the Carmarthenshire Cup final to go to complete the treble.

But for one of their players, victory in a titanic tussle with tigerish Tonmawr enabled prop Llyr Jones to add a third medal to his collection this season. He started by helping Llandovery College win the WSC Rugby title in the first half of the season on his first visit to Principality Stadium and then helped the Scarlets to win the RAG U18 crown.

To add a bit of extra lustre to his latest triumph he was able to pitch in with one of Llandeilo’s four tries. The others came from Thomas James, Rhodri Jenkins and Oliver Harris, with Ioan Thomas and Ifan Davies adding the other points from the boot.

Jones opened the scoring in the 11th minute as he converted a rolling maul into the first try of the game after a brilliant 50/22 from fullback Sion Jones had set up a major attacking position. Thomas added the extras.

Full back Charlie Thomas got Tonmawr onto the scoreboard with a penalty, but Llandelio hit back when wing James crossed in the corner. A superb touchline conversion from Thomas made it 14-3.

A second penalty from Thomas cut the gap to eight points on the stroke of half-time and then a try from inspirational hooker and skipper Elliot Tandy, later named the Go.Compare Player of the Match, gave Thomas another chance to show off his kicking skills and his conversion made it a one-point game three minutes into the second half.

The next score was going to be crucial, and it fell to Llandeilo openside flanker Jenkins. There was no conversion this time, but some of the wind had been taken out of Tonmawr’s sails.

The four and final try for the west Walians came after centre Twm Davies had picked up a loose ball on the 10 metre line and hacked it forward. The chase was on between is opposite number Callum Griffiths and his centre partner Harris.

It looked as though Griffiths had it covered as he fell on the ball in textbook fashion 10 metres out from his posts. Then disaster struck on the greasy surface as his knee knocked the ball backwards over the line to allow Harris to pounce for a try that this time Davies improved.

Now the lead was up to 13 points and Tonmawr’s terrific effort seemed over. Not a bit of it! They hit back with a try from Oliver Francis after the game had gone to passive scrums and with another Thomas conversion they were in striking range with another score.

They threw the kitchen sink into the final, frantic few minutes before conceding a turn-over on the edge of the Llandeilo 22. That allowed them to clear their lines, win the line-out and then kick the ball off the pitch to take the title.
