The No 8 broke an ankle during a recent match and has been ruled out of the biggest game of the season. She will travel with the squad to Cardiff for a clash with Haverfordwest that appears almost impossible to call with the score this season between them standing at one apiece.
“It’s soul destroying. She’s first on the paddock at training and is as keen as mustard,” admitted club chairman Richard Scannell.
Bonymaen were 39-29 winners on the opening day of the WRU Championship campaign. Haverfordwest then gained revenge with a 31-24 success in November.
Bonymaen are currently sitting on top of the Championship table ahead of Ynysddu and Haverfordwest. They were beaten 24-7 by Llandaff North in the Women’s South Wales Cup final two years ago, and Scannell says the side had “progressed nicely” this season.
“We have recruited some girls from Swansea University and have a decent team. At the time of writing, we are on course to win the Women’s Championship,” he added.
Vice-captain Angharad Jones, who has been a fixture since a women’s team was formed eight years ago, will lead Bonymaen in the absence of Evans.
“It’s 1-1 with Haverfordwest this season. We had a solid performance against them when we won but their big ball carriers had a good day in the return,” said Scannell.
“We’re hoping our forwards can match them and keep their pack in check. It should be an entertaining match between two good teams with both having the capability to win it.
“The pitch is made for running and we are really looking forward to it. The team that handles the occasion the best will have an advantage.
“Both clubs have played at the stadium, so know what’s involved. I think the strength of our bench can have a massive say in the outcome.”
Bonymaen are expecting a few hundred supporters to travel to the Welsh capital and have booked a couple of buses to transport some with others making the trip by rail or car.
Outside half or centre Lauren Smith, front-rowers Tyler Bipene and Demi Stevens ad prolific try-scoring winger Cerys Beynon are among those to watch. Scannell is also expecting back row forward Cherry Morris to shine.
“She was disappointed to be a replacement two years ago and we are expecting a huge match from her,” he declared.
Haverfordwest were beaten 62-22 in a crazy first round game in the National Cup competition before dropping down into the Plate. They then booked their ticket to Principality Stadium with a 31-26 semi-final triumph over Llantwit Fardre.
Bonymaen saw off Whitland (36-5) and then Gwernyfed (33-0).
