But nobody at the club is yet banking on bridging the gap between their third placed finish last season and ending the 2007-2008 campaign as the top dogs; Ruthin have two games in hand on the unbeaten leaders after their game at Llandudno fell foul of the weather.

“We know that Ruthin have games in hand over us, but at this stage we are happy having the points in the bag,” said Caernarfon spokesman Gareth Williams.

“The conditions at Mold were terrible from the moment the players left the dressing room through to the end. We were delighted to be trailing by only three points at half-time, but Mold did have a chance to steal the result at the death.

“It is going to be an interesting second half to the season and Mold and Llangefni have got to come to us.”

A try within two minutes of the start of the second half from lock Alan Mark set the league leaders on course to victory after they had changed ends three points adrift of their hosts.

With first use of the strong wind and driving rain the home side could only muster a single penalty from centre Dan Edmington for their efforts. With the wind at their backs Caernarfon took little time to take the lead when Mark drove over from 10 metres within two minutes of the restart.

Edmington landed a second penalty for Mold, but that was only good enough to earn them a losing bonus point as Caernarfon outside half Kelvin Morris also kicked a goal.

Mold will move into 2008 in second spot and their trip to Llangefni this weekend could be crucial to their chances of catching the leaders.

Llangefni slumped to their third home defeat in six league outings this season as they were outscored by three tries to nil by Nant Conwy. The visitors ran out 19-6 winners to leapfrog their hosts into third place.

Fullback Grant Jones was the Nant hero as he raced in for a try in each half. The visitors were 14-6 to the good at half time and Jones’s second try was the only score of the second half, as he raced nearly 70 metres up the touchline to score.

“It has been a couple of years since we have beaten Llangefni so we are very happy with the result. We’ve got a good XV at the club now and this proves we’ve got what it takes to challenge the top teams in this division,” said Jones.

There were 10 tries for Colwyn Bay in their 65-3 demolition of bottom of the table Llanidloes. Pat Leech and Tom Blackwell both crossed twice and there were also tries for Bryn Williams, Mark Earl, Jay Beardmore, Jodi Prior, Sean McDonah and Phil Dixon.

A seventh minute penalty from Dafydd Yaksley was the only score of the game as Bala beat a depleted Denbigh 3-0. With 13 players attending hooker Ffrith Roberts’s wedding the home side struggled to raise a team and couldn’t bridge the gap.

A second half try from a rolling maul by lock Dan Edwards earned Dolgellau a 5-3 win at Newtown after a Rowan Meek penalty had given the home side an interval lead.
