WRU Statement on Peel move

The Welsh Rugby Union has been informed by Llanelli Scarlets that Dwayne Peel is leaving Wales to play his rugby in England.

The WRU wish Dwayne well and thank him for his contribution to Welsh rugby. The WRU were aware of the impending move last week prior to the announcement of a proposed new strategy to regard the location of any player as an important factor in international selection.

The WRU stands by its policy of supporting the four Welsh regions in their development and retention of players from Wales.

Wales Head Coach Warren Gatland has confirmed that his 2008 RBS Six Nations squad announced yesterday, which included Peel, is not affected by this news.

“I will not penalise any of our current internationals who will not have been aware of the proposed new strategy until last week,” said Gatland. “It would be unfair as we are aware that Dwayne’s negotiations were already well advanced when we made our statement.

“It is, however, important that all young welsh rugby players know that we want to invest in them with the aim of realising that investment on the field for Wales.

“The structures and systems are being built here in Wales and we know we can nurture and develop the talent fully. We will do all we can to help the regions flourish.”

The WRU Board will consider the selection strategy proposed last week at its meeting on January 24th.
