UWIC 36 Cardiff Quins 5

UWIC 36 Cardiff Quins 5

With both teams’ scheduled fixtures called off due to the weather it was decided to rearrange this league match as the UWIC pitch was in good condition to play.

The top of the table clash with the added spice of ex-UWIC students playing for the Quins needed a good referee and both teams were in full agreement that Wayne Childs had an outstanding match.

UWIC won the game by 36 points to 5 which completely flattered the scoreline to UWIC; being played at a very high intensity with big hits from both sets of forwards, in particular Catrin Edwards was immense for Cardiff Quins and was ably supported by Zoe Eaton’s non-stop work rate around the field.

However, the UWIC front five really put their best performance of the season together with Sally Hinds, Clair Lodge, Sara Davies, Rebecca Picton and Stephanie George, which allowed some good possesion for the UWIC back row of Carys John, Christie Thompson and Helen Amos to carry ball effectively. Creating a good link with the backline where captain Rachel Poolman, Amy Day and Meg Youdan were very strong in attack and defence.

Jilly Holroyd played some intelligent football throughout, probing the UWIC defence with Amber Penrith and Hayley Baxter always a threat with their skills and pace stretching UWIC’s players.

Overall a very good game of rugby by two committed teams, unfortunately a serious leg injury to Amber Penrith was the only negative; Penrith, a very good athlete of International Rugby class will be sorely missed, and is wished a speedy recovery.
