Carmarthen Quins entertain Tonmawr tomorrow evening (Friday February 8th) in a top of the table clash that could go a long way in deciding the eventual champions of Division One West.

Both sides have amassed 51 points but Tonmawr are top having scored 46 tries to the 36 of second-placed Quins. The leaders also have a game in hand.

Tonmawr’s Senior Coach Jason Hyatt is sure it is going to be a close encounter but reckons preparations have gone well. “We have three players away with the Wales Under 20s but have a strong enough squad to overcome that problem,” he said.

“It is a great honour for the club to have players involved in international matches at whatever level and of course those international needs must come first, but it proves you must have strength in depth.

“We have been putting this squad together for two years and are now seeing the benefits of all the hard work. We know it is going to be a tough game against the Quins but our squad depth should be enough.”

Quins’ press secretary Alan Bowen is aware of the importance of the match at Carmarthen Park. “It really is a must-win game for us and the players have got the message during training this week,” he said.

“We have no injury worries and we know the lads can overcome any nerves as most of them have played at a higher level. Of course, we know it all comes down to the game itself, but we hope to satisfy our supporters and sponsors by putting on a winning show.”

There is also a top of the table clash at Eugene Cross Park in the Principality Premier Division with third-placed Ebbw Vale meeting leaders Neath. The Steelmen will be going for the double after downing Neath colours 24-17 at the Gnoll last October.

Cardiff have an opportunity of closing the gap on Neath at the top by defeating lowly Bridgend at the Arms Park.
