The WRU praised the squad for setting a standard of achievement which will now help drive the game forward in Wales at all levels.

A text message from Prince Charles was sent to the WRU Group Chief Executive, Roger Lewis, within hours of the final whistle after the 29-12 win.

It read: “What magnificent news that you have received the Grand Slam in such spectacular style! I fear that mere congratulations seem rather inadequate on such a triumphant occasion, but I am thrilled that your single-minded dedication and ceaseless labours have produced such a stunning Welsh victory. You have no idea how proud I am of you at the end of such a red letter day.”

Prince William attended the match and visited the Wales team changing room after the game to deliver his own congratulations to the team in person.

On Sunday a message of congratulations from Prime Minister Gordon Brown was delivered to the Welsh Rugby Union for Warren Gatland to mark the achievement.

The Group Chief Executive, Roger Lewis, WRU Chairman David Pickering and President Dennis Gethin all saw the team personally after the match to offer their thanks, best wishes and congratulations.

Roger Lewis said: “This Grand Slam victory is a signal to the world of what we in Wales can achieve when our talent is combined with dedication and a gritty determination to succeed. The whole squad and the management and backroom team can savour this moment and must cherish the memory for the rest of their lives.

“We chose the right leaders who selected and prepared the right players to deliver a level of success which will enrich the game of rugby and the nation as a whole going forward. It is a landmark in the rich history of Welsh rugby and bodes well for the future because we now have a great platform to build on.”

Chairman David Pickering added: “The real price paid for victory was clear in the weary but happy faces which greeted us in the victorious Welsh dressing room.

“We can all remember the Grand Slam heroes of the past and the names of the Wales international players of 2008 truly deserve their place in that company. I thank them all for their efforts and look forward to watching this team develop and grow under the watchful eyes of an excellent coaching team.”

Their words of praise were echoed by President Dennis Gethin who also praised their Grand Slam opponents, France.

He said: “I have enjoyed the privilege of watching some legendary Welsh Grand Slam victories of the past and I know how much this means to this passionate rugby nation. The young men who achieved this victory for Wales have brought honour to themselves, their families and the nation. I have enjoyed every minute of play from all the teams involved.

“We have watched some great international rugby from six marvellous teams in recent weeks and the sporting world can be in no doubt that the RBS Six Nations Championship is one of the best sporting contests on the annual calendar.”
