Pontypridd: Up for the Cup

Pontypridd hope to motivate a huge support for their crunch Konica Minolta Cup semi-final tie against Aberavon.

The match will be played at the Cardiff RFC ground on Saturday 26th April, kicking off at 5:30pm and screened live on S4C.

The Konica Minolta Cup is a trophy that Ponty are targeting this season, with the aim of keeping alive a proud club tradition, and claiming the coveted silverware for a fourth time in their history.

The Wizards of Aberavon, coached by former Pontypridd mentor Simon King, will provide a difficult obstacle in the semi-final round. The clubs have played each other home and away in the league this season, with honours shared.

A large and vocal backing by the legion of Black and White supporters who traditionally follow Ponty on such big occasions should provide a boost for the team in their quest for glory.
Club captain Nathan Strong, who led Pontypridd to cup glory in a thrilling final against Neath two years ago, is adamant that a vocal backing from the stands and terraces can make a big difference to his team’s performance.

“The semi final tie against Aberavon will be a tough consignment for us as players” said Strong, “and a good level of support on the night will be important to us. That was certainly the case in our semi final win against Cardiff at Rodney Parade in 2006. As soon as we ran out on the park, we realised how much support we had in the ground – it sent shivers down the spine and it spurred us on to victory. It’s a cliché, but the Ponty crowd are the sixteenth player, and we certainly hope for the same level of support this year again.”

The Pontypridd Supporters Club are organising a fleet of Edwards Buses to the semi final tie, with details and bookings available from club chairman Phil Lycett on 01443 662561.
