The Blues romped to a 50-12 victory over Gloucester at Twickenham to ensure the Anglo-Welsh trophy stayed in Wales.

And the former Cardiff, Wales and British Lion prop was thrilled to end the region’s wait for silverware in such emphatic style.

Young said: “This is up there with the best moments of my career. As a coach there is a different responsibility than as a player and I was so pleased to see the players, supporters and the board all with huge smiles on their face.

“I was surprised at the scale of the win but I’m proud of our effort and skill. We were outstanding at times. Days like this make all the criticism and hard work worth it.

“It’s all down to the hard work of the players. People didn’t understand that we needed to take small steps, but this is a big achievement for everyone involved with the region.”

Leigh Halfpenny set the Blues on course for the emphatic seven-try victory with two scores in the first half, boosting his hopes of a call with the British and Irish Lions.

Halfpenny said: “This season just keeps getting better all the time. This is what dreams are made of and I’m loving every second.

“We knew it was going to be tough in the final, but the boys were awesome and this win has been a long time coming.”
