Whitland end barren spell with title success

Whitland chairman Jason Bowen believes the club are back where they belong after claiming the Division Two West title, and with it promotion to Division One.

The club were relegated in the summer of 2017, but have managed to bounce back at the first time of asking. And Bowen credits new appointments at the start of the season as key to their success.

“We did a bit of restructuring,” admitted Bowen. “We brought in two new coaches, both former players, Gareth Bennett and Dan Mason. They were crucial and turned things around.

“They didn’t have experience because they are both new to coaching but they brought something new to the club. We concentrated on using players we had locally.

“We went back to basics and the team performed really well, played some exciting rugby and showed their dominance by only losing two games.”

Promotion was secured quite early but it was a straight race with Hendy to claim the title, with a 43-10 success over Mumbles ensuring the silverware went to Whitland, something the club haven’t been used to in recent times.

“We had our eyes on being champions,” added Bowen. “It’s been 24 years since we were crowned champions of a league and the players and coaches had their eyes on the prize.

“We are 128 years established as a club and I think this is one of the lowest levels we have played. We wanted to bounce straight back to Division One, that’s where we believe we should be playing rugby.

“We’ve produced an abundance of internationals and British Lions and we believe we are better than Division Two. The pedigree of our club deserves to be in Division One.”
