Rees braced for Italian backlash

Wales captain Matthew Rees has warned his players they face a backlash from Italy after their loss to England at Twickenham in the RBS 6 Nations championship.

The Scarlets shooker said the Italian team will be desperate to do well when they take to the pitch at the Stadio Flaminio to take on the Welsh.

But Rees insisted that his players are looking forward to the contest and know they can do well after a tough training schedule since the Murrayfield win.

He said: “We’ve trained hard with a lot of intensity through the sessions and the boys are looking forward to the game.
“Italy are coming off the back of a heavy defeat and we will have the backlash from that to cope with.

“We know how desperate the Italians are to do well.”

But he explained that although the Welsh camp is confident they are keeping their feet on the ground. “It was great to get that victory at Murrayfield but the squad knows and I know as captain that we have to take one game at a time.

“It’s a tough challenge ahead but we have a strong enough squad to go out there and do well. We know what the Italians are going to bring to the game and it’s a matter of us matching them.

“It’s a great crowd to play in front of and we are all looking forward to it.”
