The Dragons started the game strongly despite inclement weather, taking the first three points of the match, after being awarded a penalty on the Blues 22 in the 7th minute – Niall Martin banging over the penalty.
The rain continued to batter the players but the Dragons again came out on top as they were awarded another penalty 17 minutes in, again Martin notching up a further three points. The Blues were awarded several penalties but couldn’t turn pressure into points and the Dragons went in at half time 6-0 up.
Heavy rain thrashed the players again in the second half, making it difficult for both sides to control the ball. The Blues were awarded a penalty in the 50th minute and put their first points on the board through Gareth Hughes. A late push from the Dragons ended with captain James Benjamin crossing the line for the only try of the game, which was successfully converted by Ethan Davies.
Honours even for the Eyasses and the Scarlets on Wednesday evening as they shared a win apiece in the Under 16 Regional competition on a rain-soaked night in the WRU Regional Age Grade Championship.
Home advantage counted for nothing, with both away teams coming out on top.
The Ospreys U16’s were at Parc Y Scarlets, and they took an early lead through a try from No 8 Jonathan Fox inside the opening 10 minutes, converted by Luke Price, who added a penalty to give the Eyasses a 10-0 interval advantage.
After the break it remained very close, with the only score again coming from the boot of fly-half Price, his second penalty of the night securing a 13-0 win.
It was a different story at Llandarcy Academy of Sport, where the Scarlets U18’s won 22-12, Josh White scoring all the Eyasses points with his boot (two penalties, two drop goals) as the young Ospreys fell to the third defeat in as many games at that age-grade this season.
