Ravens shut out Swansea

Matt Silva

Bridgend coach Matt Slva is returning to one of his former clubs in the WRU National Cup this weekend

Bridgend Ravens moved into third in Tier 2 in the Principality Premiership after they shut out Swansea 19-0 at a sunny Bridgend Ford Brewery Field.

Mike Powell and star man Jamie Murphy scored the tries as Matt Silva’s side returned to winning ways following their Foster’s Challenge Cup semi-final heartbreak against Bedwas.

The last time the two sides met it had been the All Whites who came out on top 23-20 courtesy of Mitchell Walsh’s converted try 13 minutes from time.

The first-half lacked quality as both sides failed to hold a real attacking threat. The hosts took the lead through a Murphy penalty, and the outside-half had the chance to double the advantage minutes later but saw that effort sail wide.

Swansea did well in defence to hold up a certain Bridgend try, and went close themselves but opted for touch and not points at a penalty – a decision they are likely to regret given that Gareth Beer turned the ball over at the lineout.

After the break, Tudor Hughes was yellow-carded for the visitors as the Ravens began to take a hold of the game. Wing Powell crossed for the first try and Matthew Edwards almost added to that following Tom O’Flaherty’s break.

Murphy kicked two quick-fire penalties to extend the lead, and put the seal on the win with a try of his own to bring up a match haul of 14 points.
