Scarlets wing Evans free to play in PRO12 final

Steffan Evans will be free to play for the Scarlets in their Guinness PRO12 final with Munster on Saturday after the red card he received in the semi-final win over Leinster was rescinded.

Evans was sent off in the 27-15 victory in Dublin last Friday for a tip tackle on Garry Ringrose which saw the Ireland centre land on his his head.

It looked likely that talented young wing Evans – who will tour with Wales this summer – would face a ban following his dismissal just before half time.

But the 22-year-old speedster has now been cleared of any dangerous play following a disciplinary hearing via Skype on Wednesday morning.

A statement from PRO12 read: “A Disciplinary Panel convened in Edinburgh this morning to consider the red card decision against Steff Evans.

“The incident occurred during Scarlets’ Guinness PRO12 Semi-Final against Leinster Rugby at the RDS Arena on Friday, May 19 when referee Marius Mitrea deemed the player to have committed an act of foul play against an opponent player (No 13).

“The Disciplinary Panel – Roddy Dunlop QC (Chair), Roddy MacLeod and Iain Leslie (all Scotland) – decided, by a majority, that the Player undertook a lawful tackle in a manner that was consistent with the laws of the game.

“The tackle only became dangerous as a result of the intervention of Scarlets No 3 (Samson Lee).

“The Panel having directed itself under reference to the decision of the Appeal Committee in Ross Ford and Jonny Gray (RWC 2015) decided, by a majority, that this meant that the red card should be rescinded.

“The player is therefore free to play.”

The PRO12 statement indicates that Evans’ tackle on Ringrose was legal, but complicated by the impact of tighthead prop Lee in the collision.

Head coach Wayne Pivac will be delighted to have Evans available for the final.

The wing has been in fine form and had scored a first-half try against Leinster prior to his red card.

Pivac will have to do without captain Ken Owens and lock Jake Ball due to injuries against Munster, but Evans, Liam Williams and Jonathan and James Davies will all be available.
