Rhyl push for more success

Rhyl head coach Dale Blackmore is confident his side will be a force to be reckoned with in Division Two after finishing the season top of the pile in Division Three North West.

Blackmore puts the success down to a new-found togetherness amongst the players over the course of the season, which will certainly bode well for bigger challenges next season.

He said: “It was about rebuilding after a pretty poor season the year before – and if someone had said we’d end as winners in Division Three, I’d have bitten their hand off.

“We had a shake-up of the coaching staff and we got a few new players in.

“Ben Syme at 10 has been good for us, not just on the field but off it as well and Jack Hughes, who I brought in as a player and assistant coach, has made a big difference as well.

“The thing that’s changed the most from last year is the close ties between the players now.

“We’ve also managed to attract a few players back due to our recent success and we fancy our chances now in Two North to be honest.

“Realistically I’ll say top four but, with our player recruitment, we should be pushing.”

Blackmore also hailed the influence of club chairman Dick Greenwood – a former player and coach at the highest level and father of now retired Rugby World Cup winning centre Will Greenwood.

“He’s been massively influential around the place,” added Blackmore. “His experience has been massive for us over the course of the season and whereas we only had Plan A basically, he’s helped give us a Plan B and a Plan C if things aren’t really working – we’ve got something else to try.”
