Momentum with the Lions, says Davies

Wales centre Jonathan Davies says the British & Irish Lions can go into their series decider with the All Blacks with momentum behind them.

Warren Gatland’s tourists celebrated a famous 24-21 second Test victory over New Zealand in Auckland thanks to tries from Taulupe Faletau and Irish scrum-half Conor Murray.

Owen Farrell kicked the match-winning penalty to leave the Lions delighted, but still with a steely focus to get the job done in Auckland next week.

“I’m not sure how many times I’ve played against New Zealand, but obviously it’s nice to finally get a win,” said Scarlets and Wales ace Davies.

“It’s great and now we have momentum going into the decider. We’re all looking forward to going back to Auckland and hopefully taking out the series.

“I’ve been in a decider in a Lions series before. It will be a massive game, but hopefully we can do the business.

“We have to focus on the positives we can take from this game. Defensively we kept them out without scoring a try. Not many teams do that to New Zealand.

“We need to keep building, keep spirits up, and look forward to a massive challenge next Saturday.”

Davies has been in fine form in New Zealand, delivering the sort of first-class displays which helped his Scarlets side to the Guinness PRO12 title at the end of last season.

The 29-year-old midfielder started his fifth successive Lions Test in Wellington and says with one game to go, the Lions have both positives to take and areas to improve on.

Discipline is one of the latter with Gatland’s men conceding 13 penalties at Westpac Stadium.

“The red card was the referee’s decision and we had to make sure we went on and won the game after that,” Davies added.

“There was some good control there and we made sure we played in the right areas. We had to win and we did that and while some things worked well, there are others we can definitely improve on.

“The discipline straight after half time could have cost us the game, but we showed great character to come back and dig out the win. That was a huge positive.

“Within the squad we don’t really take too much notice of other people’s opinions. It doesn’t matter to me personally. Everyone has a voice and they can say what they want.

“For us we have to execute what the coaches want us to do and that’s all we care about.”
