Three former Wales U20 centres feature in a tournament squad for the first time: Dragons’ Barney Nightingale, and Cardiff Blues duo Cameron Lewis and Harri Millard.
Head coach Gareth Williams commented: “The cooperation of the regions continues and it is great to be able to expose some new players to match day scenarios against some well-established teams this weekend.”
The team will face Russia, Ireland and France as they gear up for the opening leg of the World Rugby Sevens Series in Dubai this December.
“The trip to Elche represents the start of the next phase of our training and the boys are eager to get on to the pitch and put the initial eight weeks of work to the test,” said Williams.
The success of the Wales Sevens programme was highlighted this week with the inclusion of Sam Cross – a veteran of 35 World Rugby Sevens Series tournaments – in Warren Gatland’s squad for this autumn’s Under Armour Series.
In the coming weeks, Wales will participate in match scenario sessions with England and Ireland, which Williams has identified as “a good opportunity to test our principles and systems”.
