Hooker Garin Lloyd picked up the first of the visitors’ five tries from a driving line-out in the fifth minute. Skipper Luke Scully was next over the line 10 minutes later with a wrap-around try that involved a 40 metre sprint to the left corner.
Right wing Frankie Jones bagged a third try when he used his strength at a breakdown on the home line to force his way over in the 21st minute, but Newport hit back with a try just before the break from centre Ieuan Smith after some good driving play from his forwards and then a neat inside pass from his midfield partner 15 metres out.
That made it 17-7 to NPTC at the break, leaving the visitors one try short of the bonus point they needed to move leap-frog Coleg Sir Gar, Cardiff & Vale College and Ysgol Glantaf into second place in the table.
It took 15 minutes of the second half before they bagged the bonus point with one of the tries of the night. It started at a scrum on half-way with a pick-up by No 8 Rhys Thomas and eight passes later the left wing Kyle Jones sprinted 30 metres to the line before rounding off a great move by racing to the posts.
Scrum half Iwan Temlett picked up the fifth and final try in the 58th minute that made the victory both safe and secure. He figured in the move three times, but it was a searing break by centre Tiaan Thomas-Wheeler that paved the way for the score at the posts and the fourth conversion of the night.
NPTC director of rugby Max Howells said going into the game that he wanted his side to use their back line and with four of the five tries coming from behind the scrum he will feel happy with a good night’s work.
With games at home to come against Glantaf and Sir Gar it is now very much in the hands of Scully’s side to clinch a home semi-final as they attempt to reach their first final.
