Morgannwg narrowly missed out on a bonus point but the win earned them a third place in the College League and a mouthwatering taste of the play off places.
It was Sir Gar who went ahead after 15 minutes when powerful winger Jevon Barnes crossed wide out in a move which started in the west Walian team’s own 22.
But around the half hour mark, Morgannwg got even when lively hooker Ryan Spriggs crossed for a well earned score.
Morgannwg made good use of the conditions and dominated territory with the powerful wind to their backs.
Sir Gar showed defensive strength time and time again as both sides kept errors with the ball to a minimum.
This game was a testimony to the strength in depth at this level as both teams had players missing to the national U18 squad.
With half time looming Morgannwg won an attacking scrum near their opponents line and centre Gabe Davies crashed over from a blind side move. Outside half Tom Macaloon slotted the conversion from the touchline to make it 12-5 at halftime.
Within minutes of the restart Macaloon was on the scoresheet again when he slotted a penalty from 40 metres.
Morgannwg faced some dogged pressure from Sir Gar after losing hooker Ryan Spriggs to the sinbin for 10 minutes.
But they weathered the storm and broke free from their own 22 with some fluid running from the backs which got them to a lineout near the Sir Gar line.
Sir Gar showed their spirit to repel the attackers only to see a kick fielded by Macaloon who decided to create a running move. The Morgannwg handling proved slick and despite some strong defence, flanker Mathew Marley got over the line for a well taken score.
Sir Gar were not about to give up and they went on the attack again as the minutes ticked away. Their big second row Ryan Morgan led a forward charge close to the line and emerged as the scorer of a well taken try near the posts.
That completed the scoring in a game which proved a real crowd pleaser as both teams mixed strong defence with a willingness to spin the ball wide at every opportunity.
After the game the Morgannwg skipper Jack James said: £Getting the win was the important thing for us but we also got close to taking a bonus point as well.
“We’re back into the play-off places so that gives us something to be pleased about as well.”
The victory was revenge for their away defeat to Sir Gar earlier in the season but both teams can take credit from the performances on the day.
