Jones poised for return

Wales second-row Alun Wyn Jones is set to return to action for the Ospreys tomorrow night.

The 27-year-old has been out of action since injuring his shoulder against Argentina in November.

But he is expected to make his long-awaited comeback in the Ospreys’ RaboDirect PRO12 clash with Ulster at Ravenhill.

That could put him in line for another region appearance against Connacht the following weekend, ahead of Wales’ RBS 6 Nations clash with Italy.

Ospreys’ forward coach Jonathan Humphreys has been impressed with Jones’ recovery, but he has urged caution ahead of potential return to the international stage.

“He’s going to need a few games to get up to speed,” said Humphreys.

“Hopefully he’ll play some part for us on the weekend, which will allow him to get a full game in against Connacht the following week.

“I’m sure then he’ll be right to go for Wales.

“He’s trained well and come through all the tests. Initially it was very frustrating for him but, once he could start getting involved with training, he found it okay.

“He’s come back from injuries before so he knows the process.

“The physios said he’d be out for 10 to 12 weeks and we knew he’d be at the lesser end of that because he’s such a professional.”

Ian Evans, Lou Reed, Ryan Jones, Andrew Coombs and Olly Kohn are the main second-row options within Rob Howley’s Championship squad.

But Howley has suggested that players currently ruled out could be called up to the squad later in the campaign.
