Each week we will be publishing a new part of our “train like the stars” program to help you develop the fundamental skills needed to be a successful player. These drills a snapshot of some of activities that take place at our WRU Rugby Stars camps and courses. To find the nearest camp to you visit www.wrurugbystars.co.uk.
In the first of our skill session we will teach the fundamentals of balance and agaility that will help you run like Jamie Roberts.
To perform this routine you will require balls, cones & a whistle. This routine requires a minimum number of 2 participants and will take approximately 10 minutes.
Drill 1a: Stand on one leg
For this drill you will be required to stand on one without moving while a friend/family member times you. This will help with balancing your weight during sudden changes in direction.
Tips:
- Bend your knee slightly to help with stability
- Focus on a point in front of you
Once you have mastered this drill try extended the time to 30s, 45s and then a full minute before moving onto the second drill.
Drill 1b: Rugby Statues
Setup a series of cones to a slalom format. With a rugby ball in hand begin traversing the course. When a friend/family member calls ‘Freeze’ suddenly stop and stand on one leg for 10seconds.
Tips:
- Hold the ball in two hands to help with balance
- Balance off your leading leg
Break this drill up into 2 x 5 minutes drill. You do this using a cone course or as part of a group trying to avoid each other.
WRU Rugby Stars camps are run across Wales and cater for children from 3-14. To find your nearest camp visit www.wrurugbystars.co.uk.
