Gatland ‘satisfied’ with tour opener

Wales head coach Warren Gatland applauded ‘a job well done’ by his side after the three match tour to South Africa got off to a flying start in Port Elizabeth.

Gatland was able to savour five tries in a comprehensive start to the tour – and a host of performances from players hoping for a Test call to face the Springboks over the next two weekends.

“There was a lot of ball in play time and a lot of players who stepped up to get us a good win. The penalty count against us was a bit high, but overall it was a good start,” said Gatland.

“Matthew Morgan was pretty good at full back and he was very dangerous running the ball back. Gareth Davies was also good coming off the bench.

“In fairness to the Kings, they went out and put us under pressure and made us work hard. I thought our scramble defence was very good.

“Overall, I’m really satisfied and it was a really good performance. The result was really good for confidence and it’s great to win away from home in South Africa.”
