Pivac: Warburton battle will be Davies’ biggest test

Scarlets back-row James Davies faces the toughest test of his fledgling rugby career when he takes on Sam Warburton and Cardiff Blues on Saturday – according to Head Coach Wayne Pivac.

Davies, nicknamed Cubby as the younger brother of Wales centre Jonathan, scored the only try in the European 22-13 victory over Ulster last Sunday and is battling an ankle injury to be fit for the Welsh derby against the Cardiff Blues.

It’s East vs West at the BT Sport Arms Park on Friday night, and Pivac thinks his battle with Warburton will be a valuable learning experience.

He said: “It will definitely be his biggest test so far. Sam is an exceptional player, the number one in Wales and he is a British Lion, it doesn’t get much bigger than that.

“Cubby (Davies) will be excited by that prospect and that is why we hope the ankle can get back to 100 per cent over the next few days because coming up against a player like that you want to be in your best shape.

“He will love that opportunity and challenge. He is full of energy and he goes for the full 80. He understands there are work-ons in his game; he is not the finished product. He has only played a handful of games at this level so he is still learning.”

Wales full-back Liam Williams is likely to miss the clash after aggravating an ankle problem, Scottish flanker John Barclay will again be absent with a dead leg while captain Ken Owens is back in training but is not expected back until the December 27 showdown against the Ospreys after recovering from a neck injury. But Pivac confirmed Davies should be fit for the derby.

He said: “He came through 80 minutes and did a great job, his ankle is a bit sore, as you would expect, we are wrapping up in cotton wool, but the verdict is he should scrub up.”
