The injury-hit West Wales region bowed out with a 26-3 defeat to reigning champions RC Toulon on Saturday night. Wayne Pivac’s men were left wondering what could have been after early round victories over Ulster and Leicester Tigers.
And Williams wants to get back amongst Europe’s elite by qualifying for next season’s tournament.
He said: “I have enjoyed this European campaign, but we now have to focus on the league because this is a competition we want to be playing in again, so there is a big focus on getting back into that top six. We want to play against the best. It’s the highest level we can play at so it’s important we get back in for next season.”
The star-studded French side bullied their way into an early lead and never looked in danger of letting it slip in West Wales. They showed glimpses of their class as an early Mathieu Bastareaud and three Leigh Halfpenny kicks had the game in the bag before Bryan Habana streaked over in the second-half.
The Scarlets were without six frontline internationals, but captain Williams was proud of his team-mates effort.
He said: “The boys gave 100 percent but at the end of the day Toulon were just too strong. They were very good at the contact area and turned a lot of ball over. They scored a try early on but we stayed in the battle and if we had managed to get one score, we would have been back in the game.”
