Having opening with a 19-10 triumph over Belgium in Pool C, the young Welsh side were beaten by both Russia (26-5) and Georgia (19-7) to finish in third place in the pool. That meant a quarter-final clash with the top team in the series, and the eventual winners, France.
Having already clinched their ticket to the Olympic Games in Rio next year, the French were quite comfortably the best team in the tournament and underlined that fact by becoming the only side to defeat England in the Cup final.
Wales were handed a lesson in finishing by the French as they progressed into the Cup semi-finals with a 31-5 win. That meant a return to the Pool action with the Georgians next up in the Plate semi-finals.
This time Wales were strong enough to hold on and ran out 17-14 victors to set-up a second revenge mission against the Russians. All the Welsh points came in the first half as Harley Thomson and Lloyd Williams crossed for tries which Luke Treharne converted.
The Russians hit back in the second half with two tries to make it 14-10, but were unable to bridge the gap in the end and Wales ended up as the fifth ranked team in the tournament.
