Caernarfon rack up the points

The final 43-0 score line between Gwernyfed and Caernarfon Ladies was not wholly reflective on the play witnessed.

Caernarfon succeeded to capitalise on most of their line breaks whereas Gwernyfed sadly did not have the numbers in support to benefit from theirs.

The forward battle was evenly contested in every aspect but the Caernarfon backline were more potent when on the front foot.

Caernarfon opened briskly but Gwernyfed were up to the task with stand-off Jessica Owen kicking well to relieve pressure.

The deadlock was broken when a quickly taken penalty caught the defence unaware and the feed to Elen Evans saw her dart beyond the cover to score and add the conversion. Minutes later wing Alaw Davies ripped the ball off her opposite number to free Jenny Davies who shrugged off would be tacklers to add to the score line, again converted by Evans.

Another try looked on the books when standoff Iona Evans jackled effectively allowing captain Lauren Hassett a run to the corner, however an excellent cover tackle by centre Kirsty Prosser brought the move to a sudden halt. Mid way through the half Jenny Davies was again in the right place to take at pace and power through to score.

The next score was probably the most creative with four pairs of hands instrumental before wing Alaw Davies was released to run in at the corner. Hooker Emma Edwards instigated the move with her infield charge but others chose to allow the ball to do the work by drawing the opposition thus creating the space required.

Gwernyfed to their credit were undaunted and kept plugging away with numerous forward charges gaining good ground. Lilly Snape was prominent in such phases, followed by her sister Megan who also succeeded to get her hands on the ball in order to slow down Cofi possession throughout.

Pace out wide brought the next score with the backs timing the release of wing Lauren Hassett perfectly for her arced run to allow another grounding in the corner. Another quickly taken penalty followed to undo the defence with Jenny Davies finally passing inside to Rachel Taylor who eventually grounded and afforded Evans another conversion.

Caernarfon’s Danielle Hay was a constant thorn in Gwernyfed ranks, tackling at base and restricting time and space to anyone in Green with ball in hand. For Gwernyfed, Lauren Smith put in a steady shift prior to her departing on a South Sea adventure shortly.

What finally became the closing score saw Taylor dart from the back of a ruck to run 50 meters to score besides the posts thus granting Evans the extras. Sadly in the build up a Gwernyfed player was injured and in view of her care the match was duly abandoned with everyone’s agreement.
