A bumper crowd is expected at Victoria Road for the SSE SWALEC League Division One West match on Saturday, which will be refereed by Owens.
The match takes place on the back of a career-defining weekend for the Welsh ref, who took charge of New Zealand’s Rugby World Cup Final win over Australia at Twickenham on Saturday before scooping the prestigious World Rugby Referee Award on Sunday.
Just as rugby fans flocked to Gowerton and clubhouses all over the country to watch New Zealand becoming the first nation to retain the World Cup on the television last weekend, the organisers at Victoria Road are gearing up for another busy afternoon when the world-class referee officiates.
“We’re over the moon to discover that Nigel Owens will be refereeing our match against Crymych on Saturday fresh from his exciting Twickenham exploits in this year’s Rugby World Cup,” said Gowerton Club Secretary Richard Jenkins.
“Nigel is a true professional and it will be a pleasure to welcome him to Victoria Road. With his world-class experience and swift tongue I’m sure he’ll manage to keep the seniors in check on the pitch.
“It will be a first for us to have Nigel ref a match, although he has joined us for a dinner before. We will be marking his visit after the match and look forward to a celebratory occasion following what will hopefully be a home win for the club too!”
