Wizards go top as Kynes double does for Drovers

Aberavon moved to the top of the Principality Premiership thanks to a dominant display by their forwards who laid the foundation for a 46-12 win over Bridgend Ravens at the Brewery Field.

The Wizards got off to a flying start thanks to an early try from outstanding prop Rowan Jenkins, who went over after a well executed driving maul from the pack. Outside half James Garland converted for an eight-point lead.

There was more joy for the Wizards’ front-row when hooker Ieuan Davies doubled the lead soon after with a second try, this time converted by Cameron Clement, to make it 16 points in 15 minutes. A second try from Jenkins, improved by Garland’s boot, saw the game moving away from the Ravens.

The away team’s dominance showed when wing Stefan Andrews went over for a bonus-point try and another Garland conversion made it 32-0 at the break. The home side started the second half in a more positive fashion and centre Joe Gatt crossed for their first points.

Clement and Williams provide a final flourish for the Wizards with two more tries, while the Ravens conjured up a consolation try from lock Jon Kenny.

Bedwas followed up their 46-0 Challenge Cup win over Craig Warlow’s Newport side with another impressive victory over their close rivals at the Bridge Field, triumphing 42-28. Julan Mogg gave the visitors an early lead with a penalty, but Bedwas hit back with three first-half tries.

James Dixon converted all three Bedwas tries, a penalty try and touchdowns from scrum-half Luke Crane and wing Matthew John claimed the third, to make it 24-3 at the break. Newport lost Llywarch ap Myrddin to the sin-bin just before the interval for a dangerous tackle on Richard Powell.

The visitor’s then lost Brendan Mapitt for 10 minutes to a second yellow card and that enabled Bedwas to bag the bonus point try through John, with his second score of the match.
Back row man Andrew Waite scored the fourth and final try for Bedwas, although Newport did manage to scrape a bonus point thanks to tries from Matt O’Brien, Jack Davies, Wes Cunliffe and Owen Davies, the replacement scrum-half scoring with the last play of the game.

Reigning champions Pontypridd won for the sixth successive time since December, 28-16 at Carmarthen Quins, to move into third place in the Premiership with a game in hand on the top two teams.
Two penalties from the boot of former Wales international Ceri Sweeney gave Ponty an early 4-0 lead, but a try from Wales Sevens wing Iolo Evans, converted by Craig Evans, allowed the Quins to edge ahead 8-4 at the break.
Ponty regained the lead within 10 minutes of the re-start when centre Dafydd Lockyer crossed for their first try, which Sweeney converted. Chris Clayton and Rhys Shellard added further tries for the visitors before the Quins worked replacement wing Kieran Jones over for a consolation try.

Two tries from the outstanding Ronny Kynes were at the heart of Ebbw Vale’s 14-6 home win over Llandovery, which helped to knock the Drovers off the top of the Premiership table.

A yellow card for visiting prop Greg Cunliffe after 25 minutes gave the home team an advantage and the Steelmen needed no second invitation to make the most of it. Kynes crossed for the opening score of the game and it remained 6-0 up to the break thanks to some fantastic ddefending from the home team as Llandovery threw the kitchen sink at them.

Ebbw Vale lost lock Ashley Sweet to the sin-bin at the start of the second half and this time it was the Drovers’ turn to capitalise with wing Mike Evans going over for a try to level the scores. But the home side, and Kynes, weren’t finished and the back row man powered his way over for a second try which Dai Langdon converted to claim a notable scalp.

Llanelli gained ample revene on Cross Keys for their 58-22 hammering at Pandy Park earlier in the season by making it five wins in a row with a 48-22 triumph at Parc y Scarlets.

A brace of first-half tries from hooker Torrin Myhill paved the way for the home victory. No 8 Trystan Lloyd also crossed for a try in the opening period and Llanelli led 22-8 at the break. Keys picked up a penalty try in the first-half, but conceded two more tries to their rampant hosts as full back Steff Evans and wing Ryan Davies extended the lead.

Cross Keys did pull a try back through Tom Lampard to close the gap to sixteen points, and late on Stuart Pearce and Owen Lennard exchanged tries, but the result was already settled as the hosts cruised home for an impressive victory.

Cardiff scored five tries as they thumped a lacklustre Neath side 40-10 at the BT Sport Arms Park. Three first half tries, and two more after the break, secured the victory for the Blue and Blacks.

Ben Thomas made the breakthrough for the home side when he crossed for the opening try after 13 minutes and then a penalty try doubled the lead. The Welsh All Blacks’ cause wasn’t helped when they lost Aled Morris and Richard Smith dived over for a third try.

Luke Price kicked a penalty to get Neath on the scoreboard, but soon after they lost Ben Uphill to the sin-bin. Scrum-half Tom Slater darted through a gap to cross for Cardiff’s bonus point try 15 minutes into the second half and Thomas once again converted.

Skipper Johnathon Edwards crashed over for the fifth and final home try before Neath grabbed a consolation try through Iwan Evans, which Price converted, with the last play of the game.
