Trying times ahead for Morgan

Trying times ahead for Morgan

Having become just the fourth Welsh player to reach a half century of tries on the World Series Sevens circuit, Luke Morgan is playing down his chances of reaching Taliesin Selley’s record – for the next two legs at least!

Morgan smashed through the 50-mark in his last outing with Wales when he scooted over for a hat-trick against Russia in the Shield final at Allianz Stadium in Sydney.

That leaves the free-wheeling Morgan just eight short of Selley’s record of 60 tries. Distinguished sevens players Lee Williams (59) and Ifan Evans (58) fell agonisingly short of the former international’s record.

Morgan would obviously like to enter the record books as the leading Welsh try-scorer but he is keeping his cards close to his chest as the circuit reaches America’s gambling capital of Las Vegas.

“I don’t know whether there is a jinx or not [on reaching the target], but I’ve just got to keep on doing what I do best really – try and get the ball in my hands and beat defenders,” he said earlier this week.

Wales play in round five of the world series in Las Vegas this weekend before heading to Vancouver a week later for round six.

The 23-year-old, added: “It may be pushing things to get to 60 over the next two legs in Las Vegas and Vancouver – but it is definitely a target for this season – let’s just see what happens.”
