Former Wales Sevens international Gareth Owen hopes to celebrate his new contract by helping the Scarlets book their place in the Guinness PRO12 play-offs.

The west Wales region go into the final round of regular-season fixtures just a point behind Ulster, who hold the fourth and final semi-final berth. If Wayne Pivac’s men can triumph over Munster at Thomond Park, and local rivals the Ospreys can do them a favour by beating Ulster in Swansea, then they will make their first play-off appearance in three years.

Centre Owen has been an integral part of the Scarlets line-up this campaign, making 18 appearances in the league plus another four in Europe, and he has been rewarded with a new deal at Parc y Scarlets, teeing him up for this weekend’s crucial game.

“It was make or break for us against the Dragons last weekend, if we didn’t win we knew we were going on holiday,” said the former Osprey. “Hopefully we can do a job out in Munster. It is going to be tough, but we have been to a lot of tough places this season and have shown we can mix it with the top sides.

“If we can win, it is then down to fate and we will just have to see what happens. It is good to end the season still fighting for something. When you are playing on a Friday night in the pouring rain in mid-season you are all looking to be playing for something in the final weekend.

“There are no medals for finishing in mid-table, as a professional sportsman you want to win medals, you want to win trophies, this is why we have worked hard, from pre-season through until now. These weekends are the reason we play rugby.”
