Luke Treharne and his teammates lost their opening pool game last night against Samoa who swamped the Welsh defence with eight tries in a 52-10 rout. Tries from Treharne and a debut touchdown from Lloyd Lewis proved of little consolation.
Tournament favourites Fiji had too much firepower for Wales, coasting to a 33-14 victory with Ben Roach and Morgan Williams scoring tries for Wales.
Too many missed tackles and a lack of respect for the ball proved Wales’ downfall against Scotland.
Dougie Fife finished off a good set piece move with a try under the posts but Wales found an immediate response when Roach fended off Scott Wight.
Wales weren’t level for long though as Mark Robertson stepped out of the attempted tackle of fellow Rio hopeful Sam Cross and raced away for Scotland’s second try.
Incredible defence from Wales at the end of the half kept them within touching distance – until Hugh Blake found a gap to cross from a 60-metre run in.
Scotland scored first at the start of the second half after punishing a Welsh error. Morgan Williams coughed up possession when tackled by Wight on the 10-metre line and Scotland worked the ball to Jamie Farndale who has the simplest of run-ins. Wales then blew a couple of gilt-edged chances to score before James Johnston put the exclamation mark on a comfortable win.
Wales will now drop to the Bowl competition where they will face England tomorrow.
