Brynmawr boy heads for Rio!

Sam Cross still has to pinch himself that he is going to Rio’s Olympic Games with Team GB.

After-all, this is a player who two years ago suffered bitter disappointment when he was a shock omission from the Wales squad for Glasgow’s Commonwealth Games.

Now he is Rio-bound with Britain’s 12 best players after coach Simon Amor and assistant Gareth Williams confirmed their chosen few to chase golden glory.

The Wales Sevens core player admits he cannot wait for the Olympic experience to begin.

“It is going to be unbelievable,” he said. “I just can’t wait to get to Rio. A Brynmawr boy going to the Olympics, I am not sure anyone will believe it!”

“It has been amazing year for me. The goal at the beginning of the season was to make the initial Team GB squad and then it was to make the cut and get on the plane.

“Everything has gone to plan so far and the next step is to try and achieve an Olympics medal. Selection hasn’t really sunk in yet and the opportunity is amazing.”

Cross, who has become an integral member of the Wales squad on the sevens World Series, admitted he finally realised how big a deal the Olympics are, when he along with the GB squad received their official kit.

“It was pretty surreal. We came in and the whole scale of how big this is, really hit home. First of all there is loads of kit, more than I will know what to do with. I will be the best friend for my friends and family for a few weeks.

“Stuart Pearce chatted to us a few weeks before and told us it was not until we came to the kit launch that we would realise how big Team GB and the Olympics was.

“Stuart Pearce was a great footballer and played in some huge tournaments but he said you don’t realise how small your sport is until you experience the Olympics.

“He told us how special it was being part of an Olympics family at London 2012 at an event which took over the whole country.”

Cross says a special bond has developed within the entire 27-man squad since the players from Scotland, England and Wales were brought together and the 12 going to Rio will be playing for the entire squad.

“We always said it was a 27-man effort although it was only 12 of us who would represent Team GB. The amount of work the entire squad has put in has been credit to all of us. It has been a pretty unique experience.

“Missing out on Commonwealth Games was a massive disappointment for me but looking back now it was something that spurred me on to make it here.

“My game has developed massively over the last two years and having the experience of playing regularly on the circuit has helped me immensely.”
