Brown to lead Newport again

Home town boy Adam Brown will once again captain Newport this season after guiding the club to a sixth place finish in the Principality Premiership in their last campaign.

The 28-year-old lock has made more than 100 appearances for the Black & Ambers since returning to Wales from London Welsh. Prior to that he made 10 appearances for the Dragons.

Last season was a massive improvement on 2014/15, when Newport finished bottom of the table and were only saved from relegation because the WRU Championship winners, Bargoed, couldn’t move up.

“We’re building a great squad with a good mixture of youth and experience and I firmly believe we are in a better place to challenge for silverware this year. We had a good season last year and made great strides forward,” Brown told the club website.

“We probably over-achieved, which is a great credit to the hard work the lads put in throughout the year, but I believe the youth and inexperience of challenging for silverware possibly led to our fall out of the title race at the end.”

Newport were one of a number of teams who topped the Principality Premiership table last season and went from winning five Premiership matches in 2014/15 to twice that number a year later. They tripped up in the closing stages, however, losing their final five fixtures to drop out of the title race.

“We have recruited very well in the summer and brought in some great players who have vast amounts of Premiership experience. This will hopefully complement our enthusiasm and attacking intent we showed last year and further add to competition for places within the squad,” added Brown.

“Looking at the season and how the league is different this year, our first goal has to be to finish in the top half of the table at the midway point.”

Newport kick-off their season against their biggest rivals, Cardiff, at the BT Sport Cardiff Arms Park on Friday, September 2 (kick-off 7.15pm) before hosting Bedwas on Sunday, September 11, on the weekend of the popular annual Rodney Parade Beer Festival.
