More than 200 people turned up for the U11s rugby event which welcomed teams from Fishguard, Haverfordwest, Pembroke, Pembroke Dock, Tenby and Whitland.

The proud hosts, Narberth, submitted two teams, with organisers pledging their full support for the Half A Game ethos of giving every child the opportunity to play half a game.

Narberth Junior Club Chairman, Martin Bowen, said:

“Half A Game festivals are a fantastic opportunity to join with likeminded clubs in the region and do our bit to make rugby fun and engaging for children.

“The two U11s teams we’ve got here today and the enthusiasm from all our visitors shows us that children are happier when they get equal playing opportunities.

“They will also become better rugby players as a result of regular game time, because you can’t develop your skills from the side of the pitch!”

The Narberth festival was one of eight hosted across the Scarlets region today, with each host club wecoming one of the age groups from U8s to U15s.

From Crymych to Pembroke Dock, boys and girls of all abilities were given the chance to play their part on the pitch in front of all their family and friends.

The West Wales clubs join more than 700 across Wales signed up to Half A Game, which aims to recruit and retain youngsters in the grassroots game by focusing on the rewards of rugby participation rather than the results of individual matches.

The Half A Game campaign is part of the WRU’s overarching remit to engage more people, more often with more enjoyment and more success. Clubs can find out more on the WRU Coaching Locker.

You can join in the #HalfAGame conversation on social media via the WRU’s Community Twitter @WRU_Community, where clubs are encoraged to share their photos.
