The hosts had been leading 16-13 as the match neared its conclusion, only for Risca centre James Dowle to strike a late penalty to take matters past the 80 minutes. Dan Butler restored Brynmawr’s lead in the extra period from the tee before Steffan Blackmore crossed to secure their place in the next round.

Last season’s beaten finalists Penallta progressed to the second round after overcoming Division 1 East rivals Caerleon, 25-17, at Ystrad Fawr. The two will meet again in late November in the league with both chasing unbeaten leaders Rhydyfelin, but it was Penallta who earned the bragging rights and the chance to go on another cup run.

Division 1 North champions Pwllheli ran out 45-9 winners against Caernarfon and Division 1 West Central leaders Aberavon Quins needed a last minute try to sneak past Kenfig Hill 15-14. Carmarthen Athletic narrowly beat Aberystwyth 18-17 having led 10-0 at half-time while Waunarlwydd won a 33-29 thriller away to Pontarddulais.

The derby battle in Maesteg was tight for the first 80 minutes as Maesteg led 12-7 at the break at Maesteg Quins. The scores were tied at 15-15 at the end of normal time, but the mighty Quins won the day with a blistering show in extra-time as they scored 19 unanswered points to progress into the next round with a 34-15 triumph.

In the WRU National Bowl, reigning champions Burry Port were too strong for Banwen as they won 23-9 to keep alive their hopes of defending their title. Tries from Ben Williams, Matthew Gower and Thomas Bowen ensured another trip to the home of Welsh rugby is still on the cards this season.

A brace of tries from Carwyn Owen was not enough for Abercrave as they were left to rue two missed conversions by Dane Clancy in a 28-24 defeat away to Pontardawe. Elsewhere, Pyle overcame Glyncorrwg on try count after the match finished 24-24, while Cambrian Welfare and 2013 champions Wattstown both made it into the next round with walkovers against Cowbridge and Cardiff University.
