Scarlets wait on Davies injury

The Scarlets face an anxious wait to discover if flanker James Davies can play any part in their European Rugby Champions Cup clash with holders Saracens.

The Welsh region picked up their first win in nine European fixture by seeing off Sale 28-11 in their opener, but they suffered the blow of losing impressive openside Davies to a hamstring problem.

The Scarlets had initially hoped the Olympic medallist had suffered no more than a tweak, but head coach Wayne Pivac admits it is doubtful Davies will make the starting line-up at Allianz Park on Saturday, although a scan on the problem could yet provide better news.

“We are getting a scan done on James’ hamstring. He is obviously a big part of our game and we don’t want to take any chances on that,” said Pivac.

“We will know more in terms of the extent of that in the next day or two, but at this stage he is a doubtful starter.

“You want to play in all the big games and push your case, but at the end of the day you want to be 100 percent when you do play because if you are not you get shown up and you don’t want that to count against him.”

One positive for Pivac was the performance of the centre pairing of Scott Williams and Jonathan Davies in the win over the Sharks, and he will be hoping for the same again against a Saracens side who were in formidable form in defeating Toulon on the opening weekend.

“We’ve said all along, they were going to be slow starters after the Wales tour and the time out that they’ve had and it was always going to be the case and that is how it has proved,” said Pivac.

“Jon had the two-week break and really freshened up with a conditioning block, along with Jake Ball and both played really well on the weekend.

“They will want to back that up this week, as will all our international players.”
