The weather made life difficult for both teams but the home side got off to a flying start with a third minute penalty from full back Joe Scrivens being followed by a try from left wing Adam Williams. Scrivens added the extras and the visitors had a mountain to climb.
The fight back began with a penalty midway through the first half by Jones, who used to play for the Bridge Field club. He added a second to make it 10-6 at the break.
The game then turned on a penalty try five minutes into the second half when the Cardiff pack rumbled their opponents backwards at a five metre scrum. The referee had no option other than to run to the posts and those seven points gave Cardiff a slender three point lead.
A third Jones penalty moments later extended the lead to six points and, despite losing James Murphy and Rory Pitman to the sin-bin, the Blues & Blacks held on to move into seventh in the table.
Cardiff head coach Steve Law, a former stalwart at Bedwas, admitted it was a case of ‘winning ugly’, but was delighted to see his side get on the right side of the result after three defeats to his former club last season.
“It is a really tough place to come and we will take the win. You are never going to go to Bedwas and have an easy ride because they always give 100 per cent,” said Law.
Ebbw Vale will seek to maintain their 100% record with a home clash against near neighbours Cross Keys at Eugene Cross Park. Former Keys coach Greg Woods should have the inside track on the visitors as he tries to stay ahead of the chasing pack led by reigning champions Merthyr.
The Ironmen are at bottom of the table Neath this weekend, while third placed Aberavon host Carmarthen Quins in one of the games of the day. Fourth placed Pontypridd head to much-improved Swansea, while Llandovery travel to Bridgend
