Leali’ifano ready to get his kicks in Cardiff

Christian Leali’ifano is relishing his kicking dual with Leigh Halfpenny as Wales welcome Australia to the Millennium Stadium.

The duo traded shots at goal during the British & Irish Lions victorious tour Down Under with Halfpenny named Man of the Series.

He has also been nominated for the IRB World Player of the Year award following his exploits.

Leali’ifano admits he will forever seek revenge for the 2-1 Test series defeat to Wales and while citing facing Wales as totally different, he is eager to renew his battle with the Cardiff Blues full-back.

“That last Test still sticks in my mind,” said Leali’ifano

“I remember how tough that night was. I think revenge will be on my mind for the rest of my life.

“Leigh’s a sharp-shooter – he’s proven that his whole career.

“He’s a fantastic all-round player. He’s done some fantastic things for Wales and the Lions.

“Good on him for being nominated for IRB world player of the year. He’s great with ball in hand, is very quick and a fantastic runner.

“I rate his kicking ability highly. If we give away penalties, he’s going to punish us. It’s going to be tough, no doubt about it.

“I hope I kick my goals because a lot of Test matches come down to small margins. We have got to put ourselves in a position to take a win. We have got to improve our discipline to limit his chances.”

Warren Gatland has selected 12 Lions in his starting XV to take on the Wallabies in the final 2013 Dove Men Series clash.

Leali’ifano expects Wales to take a similar approach to the Lions but is confident the Wallabies have raised their game.

“We expect Wales to try and take the same approach to this match, to bring that ferocity,” he added.

“But you’re only as good as your last game. The physicality in our game, especially in the forwards, is improving every week and we’re looking to take another step up against Wales.

“It’s hard to compare this Test to the Lions because some of the players are different. Wales v Australia, obviously the intensity is going to be there.

“What I have seen and heard of the Welsh-Australia Tests is they are always pretty big and intensive. They will be fired up to rip in and so will we.”

Leali’ifano endured an uncharacteristic off-day with the boot during the Wallabies victory over Scotland at Murrayfield. But he is confident he can put the boot to his kicking woes.

“I was disappointed with how I kicked but just glad it didn’t really cost the team,” added the Wallaby.

“That’s the big thing I was worried about. Hopefully, moving on, I will kick better.

“It’s something I had done well this year. I’m doing a bit of work this week to try and it right before the weekend.”
