The Division 3 West B club toppled the favourites with tries from Dafydd Lewis and Carwyn Davies to reach the quarter-finals for the first time in their history. Meirioin Davies added a penalty to complete the scoring, while the visitors had three penalties.

The students of Cardiff University have also reached the last eight for the first time following their 28-12 victory at Swansea Uplands. Deri had to pull out all the stops in the second half in north Wales, where they only led Wrexham 6-5 at the break.

But they piled on the pressure in the second half to reach the last eight with a 21-12 triumph. The other north Wales side, COBRA, were also dumped out of the competition on home soil as they were beaten 34-3 by Pembroke.

Visiting skipper Scott Powell set the ball rolling for the Pembrokeshire side with a try and his team led 17-3 at the break. Other tries came from centre Rhys Dalling, Sam Smith and two from outside half Toby Smith.

Deri’s fellow Division 3 East B side Hafodyrynys didn’t make it into the hat for the quarter-finals, though, as they went down 19-3 to Monmouth, while Division 3A East table-toppers Abercwmboi went to Old Illtydians and ran out convincing 39-10 victors.

It proved to be a bad cup weekend for the Penallta club as both their senior side, the defending Plate champions, and their gallant 2nd XV were beaten. Penygraig put paid to the Penallta IIs dream of reaching the Principality Stadium with a 35-13 home win.
