That’s because just 18 months ago, the then 19-year-old was ruled out of action for a year after rupturing the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.
Such an injury has in the past ended the careers of certain players.
Watkin, now 21, never gave up hope of making it back to the field and international honours have soon arrived.
Just weeks after playing in the Principality Premiership for Bridgend, Watkin is in Gatland’s squad for the Under Armour Series clashes with Australia, Georgia, New Zealand and South Africa.
“When the squad was announced I was pretty speechless, especially considering the amount I have played, my knee injury and then having concussion,” said Bryncethin product Watkin.
“During the low times I thought I was never going to get back, but the physios and my mother and father were so positive. I wouldn’t be in this environment without the support of those people.
“There will be a bit of difference if I get the chance to play for Wales compared to facing the likes of Carmarthen Quins and Llanelli for Bridgend. Hopefully, if I am selected, I will be ready for the challenge.
“Training is really intense and there’s a lot of detail to it. It’s tough and challenging.”
The strong-running Watkin, who boasts a mouthwatering combination of skill and power, will become the first player from Bryncethin to win a Wales cap should he get selected this autumn.
“My father Paul played for Maesteg and Bridgend, my brother is playing for Cardiff and my mother Kathy is playing for Bryncethin women’s team,” said Watkin.
“I’d be the first person from my club to play for Wales, if it happens. Bryncethin are so supportive of me. When the squad was announced a lot of people turned up at my house to say well done.”
Despite his tender age, Watkin is confident he can make an impact should he be selected for the autumn opener against Australia next Saturday.
He is relishing training alongside some of Wales’ more experienced players.
“I came in with Rhys Webb on the first day and was a bit nervous,” admitted Watkin.
“It would be a dream come true if I get picked, but if I don’t it’s not the end of the world because I will have had a chance to learn from the best centres in Wales.”
