You had to go back 20 games to find the last defeat for Cymoedd in the tournament, a 25-22 loss at Coleg Gwent on 29 October, 2014, and both teams will now meet again in the Cup Section of the tournament when it starts up again next month.
Cymoedd scored two first-half tries to edge 14-0 ahead, but were finally overtaken after their visitors had replied with brace of their own and outside half Ben Thomas landed a 69th minute penalty.
Prop Declan Thomas gave Cymoedd the perfect start with a try after only six minutes and full back Cole Swannack followed suit 13 minutes later when Thoms was on the sidelines having picked up a yellow card for foul play. Centre Ben Jones added both conversions and the champions looked all set to notch another victory.
But Cardiff & Vale hit back after the break and tries from centre Dafydd Smith and replacement full back Tony Lamerton, one of which Thomas converted, brought them right back into the contest. Then Thomas made amends for his yellow card by kicking the matchwinning penalty a minute from time.
Cowbridge proved their big win at Whitchurch HS was no fluke the previous week by claiming their place in the Cup Competition with a 41-10 win over Bridgend College.
Coleg Gwent qualified for a play-off clash with Whitchurch HS next week to determine which of the two schools will go into the top seven thanks to a 51-9 triumph over Llandovery College. There were 12 tries in the game, with the home side stretching clear in the second half with five unanswered efforts.
Llandovery twice took the lead in a highly competitive opening period that ended 24-19 in favour of the Gwent side. But it was a different story in the second half as wing Luke Shore crossed twice and fellow wing Joel Whitcombe scored his second.
Other Gwent tries came from centre Deon Smith, hooker Will Griffiths, full back Iwan Bergwin and centre Cob Edwards, while skipper Matt Lewis added two conversion and Duan Thomas a third. Llandovery’s Wales Under 18 centre Corey Baldwin scored a brace of tries and scrum half Aron Hemmins got another.
Ysgol Glantaf made the long trip north to meet Coleg Llandrillo at Parc Eirias, Colwyn Bay, and registered four tries in a 26-7 victory. The visitors built a 19-0 lead thanks to tries from wing Rhodri Skyrme, scrum half Jake Burge and full back Ioan Davies, two of which outside half Jake Hillman converted.
Llandrillo, who had been beaten way from home by both Cymoedd and Cardiff & Vale, finally got on the scoreboard after 48 minutes when wing Elis Roberts sped over for a try which centre Armani Roberts improved. Glantaf had the final word with a fourth try from lock Dylan Rigby which Hillman converted.
Ben Cambriani came up with two tries for Gower College as they went to last season’s beaten finalists, Coleg Sir Gar, and emerged with a 15-5 triumph. The centre scored in the 10th and 45th minutes and a conversion and penalty from outside half James Eynon gave the visitors’ a 15-0 lead.
Sir Gar finally responded with a 63rd minute try from centre Eray Wilson when Cambriani was in the sin-bin, but that was never going to be enough to overhaul Gower, who now take their place in the top-tier.
