Lockyer: We’ll put our bodies on the line

Pontypridd’s season moves up to an entirely new level this coming Saturday as they travel to face Worcester Warriors in the British & Irish Cup quarter finals.

The Valley Commandos and their army of supporters will advance on the Sixways Stadium for what can be classed, not as the match of the day, but of the season.

According to Pontypridd team manager Richard Langmead the squad are focussing well in training in the week leading up to the big game.

“We are moving up to a different level with the BIC quarter final coming up” said Langmead, “but we have been here before and we know what to expect. We are putting in some big training sessions in expectation of a tough battle against opponents who are pushing all the way for a place in the English Premiership.

“Our league form over the past few weeks has been below par but we now have an opportunity to respond and to raise our game as we play on the bigger stage. We are preparing well, and we have every confidence that the boys will respond to put in a big performance on Saturday.”

Ponty captain Dafydd Lockyer in the meantime has reiterated the never say die attitude that his squad will carry into the big game.

“Worcester will provide us with a huge challenge” said Lockyer, “but we have faced such challenges before, and when not given a chance against bigger, fully professional sides, we have often come away with a win.

“Realistically we have done well just to qualify from a tough group, and this quarter final tie will be a bonus for us. Mentally and physically we are preparing this week for what is to come – we will put our bodies on the line on Saturday and hope to cause an upset.

“The travelling support from Ponty and the valleys should make it an amazing atmosphere. We will go into the game with no fear and we must come out of it with no regrets. Win or lose, we need to put in a big performance, for our support and for the badge.”
