Williams: We must focus on our start

Wales Under 20 scrum half Tom Williams believes his side must sort out their opening exchanges and be more accurate in their execution in order to end the World Rugby U20 Championship in a decent position.

Wales lost 30-16 to double champions England, following an opening defeat to France, and Williams, who has impressed in Wales’ opening games, said, “It was disappointing, especially as it was the same scenario as against France last week. We didn’t get a good start, we let them score 15 points in the first 20 minutes and we lost by 14.”

Wales’ points came from an Owen Watkin try and 11 points from the boot of Blues and Pontypridd outside half Jarrod Evans.

“We had a disappointing start to both games,” said Williams, “and we’ve got to sort that out, we have to focus on that. We were also on the wrong side of a few crucial penalties but it’s not good enough.”

Williams, who has already represented Wales Sevens this season, and showed huge potential in Saturday night’s game, added:

“We know what we are capable of, we broke the English defence and played some good rugby at times, we had a good few chances to score but at the end of the day, we didn’t finish them off.

“We just have to keep working hard, keep playing our game and hopefully we will finish off our chances next time if we can.”

Wales play their final Pool A game against Japan at Viadana on Tuesday (17.30 UK time, S4C), for a place in the fifth to eighth place Pool.
