Pontypridd defeated Newport 34-10, despite the visitors taking an early lead through a Geraint O’Driscoll penalty. The home team hit back with tries from Geraint Walsh and Matthew Nuthall, both converted by Dai Flanagan to make it 14-3 at the break.
Flanagan extended his team’s lead with two penalties in a row, but Newport hit back with an Adam Brown try, converted by O’Driscoll. Pontypridd scored again almost instantly with Flanagan converting his own try.
Jordan Sieniawski ran in at the end to complete the victory, with Flanagan putting the icing on the cake with the conversion. Pontypridd will now host Llanelli in the last eight on 22 March.
Ebbw Vale scored six tries as they beat fellow Championships side RGC 1404, 37-24. Ian Snowdon converted the first two tries of the afternoon from Ross Jones and Wes Cunliffe before adding a penalty. Cam Regan also crossed for the home side in the first half.
Lewis Barker was on form for RGC with two first-half tries, which he also converted, but even he couldn’t help his side to victory. Snowdon got a try for himself soon after the re-start, but RGC stayed in contention with a third try, again converted by Barker.
He also grabbed a penalty to add to his total, but Luke Davies and Regan scored two more tries for Ebbw Vale as they recorded a victory that earned them a home tie against Llandovery in the quarter-finals.
