Williams is the only surviving playing member of the victorious Welsh Rugby World Cup Sevens side who ruled the world in Dubai in 2009. He has played in 33 tournaments on the HSBC Sevens World Series.

“I’m honoured to be nominated and selected to carry the baton for Team Wales ahead of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games,” said Williams.

Wales face Samoa, Papua New Guinea and Malaysia in the 16-team Rugby Sevens competition at Ibrox.

Double Commonwealth gold medallist, Kirsty Wade, Olympic and Commonwealth weightlifter, Michaela Breeze, London 2012 Paralympic gold medallist Aled Davies, and former triple Commonwealth medal-winning boxer Kevin Evans are just a few of the athletes from Wales’ sporting hall of fame that have been have confirmed as baton bearers.

From Welsh sporting heroes of past and present to inspirational pillars of the community, each baton bearer will have the honour of carrying the baton as it takes its seven-day journey across Wales’ towns, villages and communities.

Recognised by those holding events across Wales, baton bearers have been selected as a thank you for the commitment they’ve made to their communities or as a celebration of their achievements, and the relay will be brought to life by their stories in the hope that people across Wales will be inspired.

Chris Jenkins, CEO of the Commonwealth Games Council for Wales, explains; “The Queen’s Baton Relay is a chance for the whole nation to get behind the team of athletes set to compete for Wales at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games just two months later, and it really is an invitation to join us on our journey.

“By linking athletes and coaches from past and present back to the communities they came from through the QBR, we hope that it will inspire the next generation to believe that anything is possible, and that one day they could be a Commonwealth champion bringing their medals home.”

The Queen’s Baton Relay begins in Wales on Saturday 24th May 2014 and will spend seven days visiting a mixture of close knit community events, large multi-sport bonanzas and iconic landmarks before it heads across the border to England on Friday 30th May.
