Hockey, judo, Taekwondo, bobsleigh and swimming are just some of the sports where athletes will be transferring their skills from, as they undergo a day long programme overseen by Rhys Edwards, who coached Wales to their best ever placing in this year’s Women’s World Cup in France, and Richie Pugh who won the Rugby Sevens World Cup crown with Wales in Dubai in 2009.
“We’ve had a fantastic response to our Talent Identification day where the calibre from other sports has been exceptional,” beamed Edwards.
“Richie and I are really looking forward to the day where we’ll have physical testing in the morning and move towards skills in the afternoon. It’s a great opportunity for everyone involved as we look short term and long term in regards to women’s rugby in Wales.
“WRU Development officers will be playing an active role in the day’s proceedings, delivering the various stations. There will also be a number of current Wales Women’s players on hand to offer advice including Shona Powell-Hughes, Carys Phillips and Elli Norkett.”
Powell-Hughes is a firmly-established international player with 28 caps while Phillips and Norkett figured in the World Cup squad which finished eighth in the final rankings.
WRU National Performance Manager, Gethin Watts, added: “These really are exciting times for women’s rugby in Wales following the most successful World Cup’s ever.
“We have some important announcements pending regarding the long term strategy surrounding the Women’s game but we also have some significant short term goals to attain.
“The upcoming Six Nations is now just around the corner and this has added importance as it will be a qualification event for the 2017 Rugby Women’s World Cup. We will also be sending a group to Dubai in December as the Sevens agenda accelerates.
“With all that ahead we are looking for talented athletes with the necessary qualities who can be part of the next chapter in Welsh Women’s rugby history.”
