We can mix it with Europe’s best – Davies

Scarlets match-winner Aled Davies says his side’s gutsy humbling of Leicester Tigers proved they can mix it in the European Rugby Champions Cup heavyweight division.

The West Wales region are the only side in Pool Three who have not been crowned continental kings, but they sit second, with only champions Toulon ahead of them.

22-year-old Davies earned the Heineken Man-of-the-Match award on Saturday night, after his opportunistic score put his side out of the Tigers’ reach. And he was glad to prove his side can mix it with the best after the Parc y Scarlets showdown.

He said: “We really worked for that and deserved it. We were outstanding in Toulon last week but we didn’t get anything for our efforts so we knew we had to back that performance up here tonight and that’s exactly what we did.

“We have got four matches left in the pool and we need to keep improving. We are not here just to make up the numbers.”

Davies has grabbed his Scarlets chance with both hands after finding himself behind Gareth Davies and Rhodri Williams in the scrum-half pecking order.

And the man who put him back in the number nine shirt, head coach Wayne Pivac, hailed his side’s battling qualities after they denied the two-time champions a losing bonus-point.

He said: “It was helter-skelter trying to work out who went where, and for the players to deal with that I thought they did really well.

“It was a good test of character for the group that’s why I’m so pleased that we came away with the win, but also denied them a bonus point at the end. It is important and I couldn’t have asked for more from the group, to be honest.”
