Josh Matevesi: Fiji’s double agent

Fiji fly-half Josh Matevesi is going to use his Ospreys espionage in a bid to shoot down Wales on Saturday.

The Cornwall-born powerhouse has impressed in the number 12 shirt at the Liberty Stadium this season after his summer switch from Worcester Warriors.

But he will line-up in the pivot role for Wales’ second Dove Men+ Care Series test after being named as one of five changes to the Fiji side that were slain by France last week.

And even though he will not be facing his injured regional colleague Dan Biggar on Saturday, Matevesi will be using his new-found know-how to keep Wales without an Autumn win.

He said “I have been telling Dan Biggar that since September that I will be playing at number 10 for Fiji and I don’t think he believed me. I have learned a lot from the way he operates, but I have also played outside-half before.

“I can use what I have learned from playing inside-centre at the Ospreys where I’m quite physical. If the ball comes out scrappy, I’m not afraid to take it up against Rhys Priestland.

“It will be a little different from the Ospreys, where there is perhaps more structure to the game. The Fiji boys are used to sevens and our system can be quite crazy sometimes.

“But it’s what Fiji want, so I’m happy. I just give it to the boys outside and let them do their magic.”

Matevesi is part of a back-line with a combined weight of over 700 kilograms, with centre Nemani Nadolo providing 20 stones worth of go-forward.

And even though Matevesi has grown close to his Ospreys team-mates, he will be trying to knock down the Welsh  door for 80 minutes.

He said: “It’s crazy I’m going to be playing against the guys who I train with every day. I’m excited to be playing against some of my team-mates.

“Some of these guys are my best mates who I would do anything for when I pull on that Ospreys jersey. While we will come to blows in the game, we will have a beer afterwards, or in their case, an energy drink!”
