Caernarfon in cruise control

WRU

League leaders Kidwelly were commended for honouring the fixture since they travelled with a depleted squad and were granted a few Caernarfon players to ensure that the match went ahead.

However the match was devoid of the usual graces expected with constant negativity detracting from what could have been an interesting and quite intriguing challenge as the home side ran out comfortable 22-0 winners.

Caernarfon, playing uphill from the off, drove at the heart of the Kidwelly back line but were granted very little time nor space to threaten. A break from midfield finally saw Lauren Hassett feed and loop winger Malen Williams to go off on a solo run that took her to the try line to open Caernarfon’s account with ten minutes played. A series of short penalty charges followed but yet again the Kidwelly rearguard matched all that was thrown at them with Lowri Harries and her band of forwards strong in the tackle area.

Caernarfon had stalwarts of their own, none more so than prop Emma Edwards who’s tackle count and meters gained with ball in hand was second to none. The second breakthrough came from a stolen lineout by Grisial Pugh that led to charges from Olwyn Jones and Cenin Eifion to tie in the defence thus consequently allowing Lauren Hassett enough space to outstrip the defence to score her second try. Malen Williams successfully converted this effort.

Kidwelly’s Karen Mayze was shrewd in marshalling her outnumbered defensive line and was quick to snuff out any potential threat whilst stand off Jodie Evans relieved pressure with lengthy clearances. However neither could be at fault when a dislodged ball following a midfield tackle allowed centre Alaw Davies to sprint clear and extend Caernarfon’s lead close to half time.

With the second half underway and Kidwelly having lost the service of the livewire scrum half Keely Evans through injury the task for the visitors became increasingly difficult. Others in the Cofi ranks upped their game, namely Mary Atkinson and Sarah Williams who fielded well and charged with purpose. The latter took on a Jenny Davies pass before releasing Jess Kavanagh who showed a clean pair of heels to the tiring Kidwelly rearguard to secure the Cofis a bonus point try. Sadly soon afterwards another injury resulted in the match being curtailed short of the full 80minutes.

Next week Caernarfon are due to visit Maesteg Celtic who themselves have been in fine form with their only reverse coming narrowly at the hands of Kidwelly.
