King determined to take chance

New call up James King has admitted he won’t have time to be nervous if he’s involved in Wales’ Six Nations opener against Ireland.

The Ospreys man has been rewarded for his impressive form at regional level by Rob Howley and is in contention to feature at the Millennium Stadium on February 2.

With new calls to learn it’s been a hectic start to the Wales camp for King though he says he’s enjoying every minute.

“I’m getting used to the calls and I’m happy with how it’s going at the moment,” he said.

“I’ve only just started calling for the Ospreys but I’ve had a good study of the line outs and drilled them into my head.

“As soon as I came in I was straight on the laptop and trying to learn them.”

Born in Australia to two English parents, King was schooled in north Wales before moving to play for the Ospreys. After recently signing a new three year deal with the region, he is now qualified to play for Wales through residency and is determined to take his opportunity.

“I don’t think I’ve got time to be daunted,” he added.

“We’ve got Ireland in two weeks and if I want to be anywhere near getting into that squad I need to settle into things as quickly as possible. I can’t wait for things to happen otherwise I’ll be left behind.

“I just want to keep my head down, do things right and hopefully get myself in contention for this Six Nations campaign.”

King has impressed in the back row though he is seen primarily as a lock for the upcoming campaign. And he says he would play anywhere as long as he gets to pull on the red jersey.

“I’m a second row at the moment. That’s where they’ve put me and whether I can slip into the back row depends on injuries I guess,” said King.

“I’ve got to work hard these next two weeks on fitness, get up to scratch and hopefully be in contention to play.

“I wanted to work on the second row aspects because I’ve mainly played mainly back row.

“I’m happy to play anywhere. If they asked me to play on the wing I would do. I wouldn’t be very good at it but I’d try.”
